Don Roland It was fifty years ago this summer that our family moved from Winters to Manhattan Beach, California. There I finished high school, graduated from college (University of California and Claremont Graduate School), married my wife Kathy (February 1 is our 43rd wedding anniversary), raised three children, pursued a business career in printing with the Los Angeles Times, and became Chairman and CEO of a printing and advertising company known as Vertis Communications. In 1995, I moved our corporate headquarters from Southern California to Baltimore, Maryland, and Kathy and I moved to Annapolis, where we still live today. In 2003 I was named to the Printing Industry Hall of Fame. I retired as Chairman and CEO of Vertis in 2006, remain on the Vertis Board, and am enjoying a transition into full retirement. I enjoy boating and fishing, photography, and calligraphy.
Above is a family picture from our youngest daughter Jenny's wedding
last Valentine's Day. Jenny and her husband Phil Wolfe own an Arabian
horse training facility in Georgetown, Delaware (about 85 miles from our
home in Annapolis). In the photo you see on the left our daughter Aileen
and her husband Richard Wall (she teaches second grade in Camarillo, CA
and he is a LAPD officer). Next to them is their daughter and our
granddaughter Bethany who is a sophomore in high school. Of course,
Jenny and Phil are the bride and groom. On the right next to Kathy is
Don Jr. and his wife Randa (she teaches chemistry at University of
California Santa Cruz and he is an executive at GraniteRock in
Watsonville, CA. Upfront is our grandson Ryan Wall, who is in the
seventh grade. |

My husband retired December 1999 from the Defense Intelligence Agency at the Pentagon after 32 years of service. He has loved retirement and continues to stay busy. We have a son, Michael, and a daughter, Christy. Michael and his wife have three children now, all under the age of three. We’re quite lucky to be only a mile away from our grandkids. Christy just returned from Europe after living three years in Florence, Italy. She now speaks and writes Italian fluently. While in Europe she became quite a world traveler. We’re happy she has come back to the States to live although because she was there we made two trips to Europe ourselves. Having her as a tour guide was a plus. |

Paul and Lavera Tharp
We retired in 1991, sold our
house in Winters in 2001 and went full time in our 5th wheel. We
go to the valley (McAllen) for 5 months in the winter, then back to
Winters in April for 3 months then to Ruidoso, New Mexico for 2
months, back to Winters until it gets cold and then head to valley
again. We have one son, Blair and daughter-in-law Londa.
They have a son Haden and daughter Kinsey. Blair is a county
commissioner for Gaines County in Seminole, farms and works some in
the oil field, so he stays quite busy. Paul helps him on the
farm when needed and loves it. We are in the process of
building an apartment in our pecan orchard in Winters for our old
age...Ha.....and are thankful everyday for our health, family and
friends. |

I finished business school in Austin in 1961. Moved back to Abilene and worked for General Dynamics for a couple of years. In 1962, I married Maloy (from Bearcat land) and we had a good life together for 41 years. We have 2 sons and 4 grandchildren that are the cream of the crop. Maloy was in the oilfield business so we moved around alot in Texas and Louisianna opening oilfield supply stores for this one company. It was good experience and I eventually started working at the supply store and learned to love it. They say "oilfield work is contagious". And it is. We moved back to Abilene in 1985 and we were kinda burned out from moving (think we were getting older) . I worked for a state agency The Railroad Commission of Texas (we regulated the oilfield). Maloy continued in the oilfield until it went "kerplunk" and he had to find another way of making a living. At 45, it wasn't easy. But we survived and had fun and enjoyed ourselves. We were looking forward to retirement but in 1999, Maloy had cancer and he survived for 4 1/2 years with cancer and treatments. He had kidney cancer, and it metasizied to his lungs, brain and eventually bone cancer and he passed away in 2003 after a long, hard battle. Two weeks before he died, I took him to see our grandson play football. He had to sit in the car but he was a fighter. Wouldn't change any of it. Just wish he could have beat it but God didn't intend for that to happen. So, in 2004, I retired and now I stay at home. Enjoy my grandkids and stay ever so busy with them. One grandchild and a son lives with me and the grandson was 7 months old when they came and he will be 16 in Aug. so he's got a special place in my heart. Plus, he kept Maloy going for several years. I don't do exciting things but I do enjoy my life and go to church regularly. That is about the extent of it. |

I retired to Oaxaca, Mexico, in 2002. Oaxaca is a beautiful
colonial city located in a high mountain valley around 300 miles south
of Mexico City. To see photos of Oaxaca, my home, and many of the
cultural events check out my website at: I have one daughter, Alexis, who works for CBS in Boston. Don't understand how she can stand the cold weather after growing up in Hawaii. I hope I never see snow again. She comes to Mexico every year and we head for Acapulco and the sunshine. She is single but I have promised to move to Boston if she gets married and has children. I must have been out of my mind when I made that promise. But I would! I look forward to hearing from you.
Hasta pronto, Bill |

Three years ago I moved to Lake Buchanan to be closer to my family and have finally settled into a wonderful new place and am doing fine. So fine, in fact, I will soon be a GREAT-grandmother!
I would love to have a copy of the group picture and any other printed memorabilia that might be available. |
